At last ChatGPT Pro is on the way: what are the price and advantages?

At last ChatGPT Pro is on the way: what are the price and advantages? ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) pro version will be released soon. At what price will it be given the sophisticated nature and the work it does? Since it was launched back on November 30, 2022.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned (an approach to transfer learning) with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques.

ChatGPT was launched as a prototype on November 30, 2022, and quickly garnered attention for its detailed responses and articulate answers across many domains of knowledge. Its uneven factual accuracy was identified as a significant drawback. Following the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI was reportedly valued at $29 billion.

ChatGPT was fine-tuned on top of GPT-3.5 using supervised learning as well as reinforcement learning. Both approaches used human trainers to improve the model’s performance. In the case of supervised learning, the model was provided with conversations in which the trainers played both sides: the user and the AI assistant. In the reinforcement step, human trainers first ranked responses that the model had created in a previous conversation. These rankings were used to create ‘reward models‘ that the model was further fine-tuned using several iterations of Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO).

Proximal Policy Optimization algorithms present a cost-effective benefit to trust region policy optimization algorithms; they negate many of the computationally expensive operations with faster performance. The models were trained in collaboration with Microsoft on their Azure supercomputing infrastructure. ChatGPT is an excellent example of how large language models have the power to automate certain manual and low-risk work.

In addition, OpenAI continues to gather data from ChatGPT users that could be used to further train and fine-tune ChatGPT. Users are allowed to upvote or downvote the responses they receive from ChatGPT; upon upvoting or downvoting, they can also fill out a text field with additional feedback.

Features and limitations

While the core function of a chatbot is to mimic a human conversationalist, journalists have also noted ChatGPT’s versatility and improvisation skills, including its ability to write and debug computer programs; to compose music, teleplays, fairy tales, and student essays; to answer test questions (sometimes, depending on the test, at a level above the average human test-taker); to write poetry and song lyrics; to emulate a Linux system; to simulate an entire chat room; to play games like tic-tac-toe; and to simulate an ATM.

In comparison to its predecessor, InstructGPT, ChatGPT attempts to reduce harmful and deceitful responses; in one example, while InstructGPT accepts the prompt “Tell me about when Christopher Columbus came to the US in 2015″ as truthful, ChatGPT uses information about Columbus’ voyages and information about the modern world – including perceptions of Columbus to construct an answer that assumes what would happen if Columbus came to the U.S. in 2015. ChatGPT’s training data includes man pages and information about Internet phenomena and programming languages, such as bulletin board systems and the Python programming language.

Unlike most chatbots, ChatGPT remembers previous prompts given to it in the same conversation; journalists have suggested that this will allow ChatGPT to be used as a personalized therapist. To prevent offensive outputs from being presented to and produced from ChatGPT, queries are filtered through OpenAI’s company-wide moderation API, and potentially racist or sexist prompts are dismissed.

ChatGPT suffers from multiple limitations. OpenAI acknowledged that ChatGPT “sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers”. The reward model of ChatGPT, designed around human oversight, can be over-optimized and thus hinder performance, otherwise known as Goodhart’s law. ChatGPT has limited knowledge of events that occurred after 2021. According to the BBC, as of December 2022, ChatGPT is not allowed to “express political opinions or engage in political activism”. Yet, research suggests that ChatGPT exhibits a pro-environmental, left-libertarian orientation when prompted to take a stance on political statements from two established voting advice applications. In training ChatGPT, human reviewers preferred longer answers, irrespective of actual comprehension or factual content. Training data also suffers from algorithmic bias, which may be revealed when ChatGPT responds to prompts including descriptors of people. In one instance, ChatGPT generated a rap indicating that women and scientists of colour were inferior to white and male scientists

When will ChatGPT Pro be released?

A paid version of ChatGPT will be released. Intended for professionals, it will offer several advantages over the free version, such as better performance. Ahead of the launch, OpenAI is still wondering about the fair price of this “ChatGPT Pro”.

On its official Discord server, OpenAI has indeed announced its intention to monetize its generative artificial intelligence to “  ensure the long-term viability of the tool”. To generate revenue, the San Francisco start-up does not intend to display advertisements on the interface. Instead, OpenAI plans to offer a paid offer, aimed at professional users.

It was inevitable. OpenAI could not forever offer ChatGPT for free to all Internet users. To ensure the operation of the chatbot, the firm pays out large sums continuously. According to Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, the computing costs generated by the tool are “  exorbitant”. Each conversation costs the company several cents. Despite massive investments from Microsoft, the situation is not sustainable in the long term.

The advantages

On Discord, OpenAI briefly described the advantages of the future paid offer, referred to as ChatGPT Professional. First, the company is committed to making this Pro version continuously available to customers.

At the beginning of last month, ChatGPT had more than one million users worldwide. Faced with the explosion of requests, artificial intelligence has regularly found itself inaccessible. A warning then appears on the screen and the conversations are suspended. This is why OpenAI will include an accessibility guarantee in its paid plan.

Additionally, ChatGPT Professional will be free from the limitations that will be imposed on the free version. Users will be able to converse longer with the chatbot, i.e. send it more requests. The firm promises “  at least twice the daily limit  ” of the free solution. To distinguish the two offers, OpenAI will therefore start to strongly limit the maximum number of requests for the free version.

Finally, Greg Brockman, the other co-founder of OpenAI, promises ”  higher performance  ” for ChatGPT Professional customers. In view of the advantages stated, it is understood that the resources of the servers will very logically be allocated in priority to paying users.

What price for the premium version of ChatGPT?

In the message posted on Discord, OpenAI specifies that the project is still in its genesis. The company has not yet clearly defined the contours of the premium offer. That’s why it asks for user feedback through a Google Docs questionnaire.

One of the questions on the form is about the price of ChatGPT Professional. Apparently, OpenAI does not yet know what its price list will look like. The form asks several questions, such as ”  at what price (per month) would you consider ChatGPT to be so expensive that you wouldn’t consider buying it?” , in order to try to determine the fair price of the offer Unsurprisingly, OpenAI seems to be considering a subscription formula rather than a one-time purchase.

The company has launched a waiting list for customers interested in the paid offer. It is possible that registrants will get priority access to ChatGPT Pro when opening a possible beta program.
