Vivo, a leading smartphone manufacturer, has discreetly introduced the global variant of its latest model, the Y78. This “global” version stands apart from the Y78 launched in China earlier this month, featuring notable differences. Boasting a larger size and a distinct chipset, the global Y78 closely resembles the Y78+ released in April, albeit with some deviations.
The standout feature of the global Vivo Y78 is its expansive 6.78-inch display, equipped with a 120Hz AMOLED panel and FHD+ resolution (20:9). Embedded beneath the screen is a cutting-edge fingerprint reader. Sporting a curved display, the phone manages to maintain a relatively narrow profile for its size, measuring 164.3 x 74.8 x 7.9mm and weighing 177g.
Constructed with a plastic body that holds an IP54 rating, the device ensures effective dust protection and can withstand splashes of water. Positioned within a punch-hole cutout on the front is a 16MP camera (f/2.45), while the rear camera module includes a noteworthy 64MP sensor coupled with an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. Accompanying these features are a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. It’s worth mentioning that these specifications differ from the other Y78 variants, which include an 8MP selfie camera and a 50MP rear camera.
Under the hood, the Y78 is powered by the Snapdragon 695 chipset. Although not the fastest chipset available, it provides the advantage of 5G connectivity. Vivo has paired this chipset with 8GB of RAM (expandable by up to 8GB of virtual RAM) and a generous 256GB storage capacity. However, it’s important to note that there is no provision for external storage. The chipset’s limitations restrict video recording to 1080p at 30fps, similar to the Y78+. Out of the box, the phone runs on FuntouchOS 13 based on Android 13.
The Y78 is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, supporting 44W fast charging, mirroring the specifications of its counterparts. The package includes an 11V/4A charger and a USB-C cable, and in certain regions like Singapore, a basic case and a pre-applied screen protector are also provided.
Although the price of the Vivo Y78 has yet to be disclosed, the smartphone is expected to arrive on store shelves in the near future. It will be available in two stunning colour options, Dreamy Gold and Flare Black, both featuring an attractive gradient effect.
