She is the daughter of Ur, Gray’s mentor. She was taken while still very young by the Bureau of Magical Development. They perform painful experiments on her against her will which made her resent not only the bureau but also her mother, who she believed abandoned her.
She is a former member of the Magic Council. She was also a former member of Grimoire Heart, where she was the leader of the Seven Kin of Purgatory.
Ultear is also very strong and uses different types of magic (Time Magic (Arc of Time), Possession Magic, Molding Magic (Ice-Make), Transformation Magic, Thought Projection, Telepathy)
