Elon Musk launches X.AI, A new AI company
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has established a new artificial intelligence firm called X.AI, as per a business filing from Nevada last month. Musk is listed as the sole director in the filing dated March 9, while Jared Birchall, who oversees Musk’s family office, is listed as the company’s secretary. Despite being publicly skeptical about the future of AI in the past and calling for a complete halt to AI development due to the technology’s potential risks to society, Musk has founded an AI company.
Reportedly due to an internal power struggle, Musk departed from OpenAI in 2018, despite being a co-founder of the prominent artificial intelligence firm. He has reportedly sought to build a rival to OpenAI, recruiting artificial intelligence engineers for a new venture for months.
Last month, a group of technology experts, including Musk, wrote an open letter advocating for a development pause in AI. The letter stated that in recent months, AI labs have been engaged in an uncontrollable race to create and implement increasingly powerful digital minds that nobody, not even their makers, can comprehend, forecast, or effectively manage.

During an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News, Musk cautioned that “AI poses a greater risk than issues such as poor aircraft design or maintenance, or faulty car production.”
“In the sense that it has the potential — however, small one may regard that probability, but it is non-trivial — it has the potential of civilization destruction,” he said.
In recent years, the field of artificial intelligence has gained immense popularity, with tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon investing in the space, and Microsoft alone investing as much as $10 billion in OpenAI, while also competing with startups in the sector. This company now adds to Musk’s extensive portfolio, which already includes Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX, Boring (a tunneling firm), and Neuralink (a biotech company).
