The mobile phone chipset company is one of the most active as giant mobile phone companies keep coming up with newer and more powerful flagship devices. We lastly talked of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chipset as well as the MediaTek Dimensity 9200+.
This time around, MediaTek is reportedly working on its upcoming flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9300, in partnership with Vivo. This chipset is expected to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, according to a recent report.
Weibo’s renowned tech blogger @DCS claims that the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 will be manufactured using TSMC’s N4P process which is likely the same process that will underpin Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, indicating that the advanced chipset will not feature the latest 3nm process.
At the end of last year, MediaTek launched the Dimensity 9200, but due to the significant market success of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the adoption rate of the MediaTek flagship chipset has been low. As a result, the company is reportedly planning to develop a direct successor to challenge Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship SoC.
What of the output?
Compared to the original 5nm technology, TSMC’s N4P process boasts an 11% increase in output. When compared to the N4 process, the N4P process shows a 6% improvement, while reducing process complexity and shortening the wafer cycle time by reducing mask count. TSMC also claims that the N4P process technology supports the seamless transfer of 5nm process products. Furthermore, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 CPU includes super-large, large, and small cores, with the super-large core being Cortex X4 that only supports 64-bit programs.
In fact, all performance cores of the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 support 64-bit applications. The evolution of MediaTek and ARM shows that chip brands have robust support for 64-bit, and both super-large and large cores have removed support for 32-bit.
Furthermore, the Dimensity 9300 chipset is anticipated to support mobile light chasing, which can create more realistic soft shadow effects for mobile games. This technology accurately depicts the impact of distance and light intensity on shadows, resulting in more precise detail changes that mirror real-world physics. As a result, shadows appear more natural and blurrier, akin to reality. Additionally, ray tracing technology can produce more authentic mirror reflection effects, such as those seen in mirrors on walls and reflections in puddles.
Launch date
Numerous sources suggest that the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 will be launched in the second half of 2023, with reports suggesting a probable release date of October 2023. The Dimensity 9300 is expected to rival Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but as there is limited information available about the chipset, it’s currently unknown how it will compare.
However, it’s worth noting that the Dimensity 9200+ has already shown remarkable GPU performance compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Both the SD8 Gen3 and Dimensity 9300 will likely employ the same TSMC N4P node. Currently, only Apple’s Bionic A17 chip will utilize the 3nm manufacturing process this year, and all Android chip manufacturers will be limited to using the TSMC 4nm process.
